JOHN BALL Personal profile John has been with Ward Williams since 2004, having joined as a result of a merger of tax practices, and is our Corporate Tax Manager. He is married with a son and a daughter and lives in Reigate. As well as having qualified and practiced as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Taxes, John was previously group tax adviser at a FTSE 100 company and a senior manager at both Top 4 and Top 20 London accountancy practices, where he ran both mixed tax and private client tax groups and acted for many high net worth individuals and their companies. Expertise John’s main value to clients arises from his breadth of experience and his consistent exposure to tax practice, both as ‘gamekeeper’ and ‘poacher’, for a period in excess of 30 years. His knowledge of the needs of high net worth individuals and a grasp of the complex business tax rules ensure that he is able to provide up to the minute corporate and personal tax advice as well as deal with international and VAT problems and, where appropriate, bring to clients attention commercially valuable tax planning ideas and strategies. Personal interests As well as having a lively interest in politics and local affairs, John’s first love is music and he has been a member of several blues and rock bands and is now forming a new blues group. TESSA CONLON ACCA Personal profile Tessa has worked for Ward Williams since 2006 and furthered her degree in Accounting and Finance by qualifying as a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in 2008. Expertise Tessa’s primary role is managing our outsourcing department. Working closely with the outsourcing team, she utilises her excellent organisational skills to ensure the monthly and quarterly deadlines are met. She also provides statutory accounting services to our outsourcing clients, and specialises in offering bespoke management accounts. In addition to her position in outsourcing, Tessa has a portfolio of personal tax clients. She enjoys her varied role and is able to utilise her knowledge in these different areas to provide clients with a valuable service. Personal interests Along with the other ladies in the outsourcing department, Tessa recently completed the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research. PAUL FLOWERDAY AFA Personal profile Paul has worked at Ward Williams since 1995 and is our Practice Director. He is married with two young sons and lives in Sussex. He became an associate member of the Institute of Financial Accountants in 1994 and is also an affiliate member of the ICAEW. Expertise Paul’s strengths lie in his organisational skills which, along with his knowledge of the firm, assist him in developing the internal infrastructure of Ward Williams and the practice’s business strategy. In addition to his practice management role, Paul also has a varied portfolio of clients including business start ups, housing associations and owned managed businesses. In conjunction with Ward Williams HR, Paul also provides accounting staff recruitment services to clients, including candidate selection and interviewing. Personal interests A past Chair of the Trustees of the village Pre-School where he lives, Paul is also a Parent Governor of the village Primary School. He also fund raises for the National Autistic Society as well as a Special Support Centre for autistic children in Sussex where his eldest son is educated. PHIL GRAINGER ACA Personal profile Phil is managing director of Ward Williams Limited. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant with over 15 years post qualification experience in the SME market. Expertise Phil has specific responsibility for the Outsourcing department which provides bookkeeping, VAT, payroll and management accounts support to clients. He also deals with accounting software, systems implementation, is well versed in major accounting packages and offers his clients training and after sales support. Personal interests Phil enjoys playing golf, tennis and running. With his running he regularly takes part in the London 10K run on behalf of the Bader Society. As his local golf club’s Treasurer, he has involvement with annual charitable work in supporting his golf club’s Captain. Annually, the golf club raise over £10,000 for local and national charities. RICHARD HAYWARD ACA Richard oversees our corporate services department, with his focus on providing commercial advice which delivers value to our clients. He works closely with businesses in developing and implementing business strategies. He specialises in working with overseas businesses who want to establish a UK presence. |

MALCOLM McKINNELL ACA Personal profile Malcolm is a chartered accountant with almost 25 years experience in the profession. He trained with medium-sized city firm Longcrofts. In 1992 he, and Richard, set up their own practice, Ward Williams, which now has offices in Surrey and Berkshire. Expertise Malcolm oversees our business services and tax departments. Clients welcome the way he provides advice in a simple, easy to understand manner. He has a very personal involvement with his clients and his hands-on approach allows him to understand their requirements and identify the factors that enable them to achieve their aims. His clients continue to benefit from his extensive tax and business knowledge and his ability to apply it to the real world. Personal interests Malcolm is heavily involved in the local community through his work with the local schools and charities. |

CATHY PINN Cert.ICSA Personal profile Cathy has been with the practice since 2004 having previously worked for a FTSE 100 company. Expertise Having been recently awarded the Certificate in Company Secretarial & Share Registration Practice from the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators, Cathy brings her knowledge and propensity for organisation to her role as head of the newly formed Company Secretarial Department. Cathy works closely with the department heads of the firm and clients alike to ensure efficient management of statutory compliance. JAMIE ROTH ATT Personal profile Jamie was recruited to the Ward Williams Personal Tax Department by Phil Grainger in 2003 after they originally trained in the same firm in the late 1980s. He qualified as a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians in 1991 and is currently studying, once again, with a view to becoming a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners. Expertise As the department head for personal tax, Jamie works closely with the other members of the personal tax team, offering tax compliance and consultancy services to individuals and small businesses. Personal interests Away from the office, Jamie has become a regular fixture at the local health club, having been forced to curtail his Old Boys’ football activities. ERIN WALLS ACA Personal profile Erin has worked for Ward Williams since 2005. She is married, lives in New Malden and holds a first class degree in Accounting and Finance. She completed her ACA qualification in 2008. Expertise As a manager in the Corporate Services Department, Erin maintains a portfolio of corporate clients but has a particular interest New Media and Marketing companies and the audit of international subsidiaries. Together with running audits and offering general business advice, she manages the audit team and is involved with student recruitment and training. RUSSEL WARBURTON FCA Personal profile Russel was born in Cardiff in 1950. After a grammar school education he signed articles in 1968. Having moved to London in 1970 he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1974 and became a fellow of the Institute in 1980. Russel is married with two grown up children. Expertise Russel’s principle area of expertise is corporate finance. He acts as an external finance director for a number of companies, the turnover of those companies ranging from £1 million to £30 million. Russel spent 10 years as a full time finance director in commerce providing him with detailed experience for this sort of role. Russel’s other principle role is the development of a complete turn around service with a one stop shop concept. The service is being developed in partnership with other organisations that add the provision of funding and general management to Russel financial acumen. Personal interests Russel is a keen sports fan with particular interest in cricket and rugby. He has recently taken to the golf course having retired after 50 seasons on the cricket field. JANE WATFORD Personal profile Jane has been with Ward Williams since 2001 and has gained extensive payroll knowledge since joining the department, which she now manages. Expertise Jane has exceptional organisational and communication skills which is essential for the payroll department to run smoothly and efficiently. Under pressure Jane still manages to keep her colleagues entertained with her great sense of humour. Personal interests Jane enjoys watching tennis and playing the occasional round of golf as well as being a keen photographer. ANDREW WEBB FCCA Personal profile Andrew is our Operations director and is responsible for seeking ways of making our processes and work flows as effective as possible. After Andrew completed his AAT examinations, he qualified with the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants with BDO Stoy Hayward in 1998. Expertise Andrew has extensive experience of providing accountancy solutions and associated taxation aspects to business start ups and owner managed businesses. He is also responsible for some larger audit clients including groups with overseas subsidiaries. Andrew specialises in OMB advisory, business services solutions and audit and assurance. He prides himself in providing a personal and conscientious service to the clients he services. Personal interests Andrew enjoys travel, golf and running. He has previously completed the London marathon and a number of half marathons for charity. He actively supports local groups where he lives including supporting the Scouts.
