JUMP FOR HENRY!
On 31 August 2008 our Practice Manager Paul Flowerday will take part in a static line parachute jump from 3,000 feet over an airfield at RAF Weston on the Green, Bicester, Oxfordshire. The team name for the merry bunch of 3 paratroopers is Jump For Henry!; the other paratroopers being Iain Macleod and Grant Revan. They are raising money for The National Autistic Society, the national charity dealing with the rights and interests of all people with autism.
WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism is a brain disorder that affects development. It can affect a person’s ability to communicate, relate to others, and interact with his or her surroundings. Signs of autism usually appear by about 18 months of age. It is usually diagnosed between the ages of two and three. There is no cure for autism but early diagnosis and treatment can help people with autism lead more fulfilling lives.
WHY DOES AUTISM AFFECT PAUL?
Henry is Paul's five year old son who was diagnosed with autism in October 2006. Henry finds every day a challenge. Things that ‘neuro-typical people’ take for granted (such as communicating our needs, following simple instructions, or even making friends) he finds incredibly difficult. However, with the right education and support, Henry will overcome some of these obstacles although it will take some time and effort to achieve.
So, that is why Paul decided to set himself a challenge to raise awareness and of course vital money for the NAS. Their support and resources are crucial for families like Paul's coping with a condition like autism on a daily basis.
This year will also mark a milestone birthday for Paul (40) so instead of having a party he thought he would do something far more crazy worthwhile!
