London Marathon Volunteering! Written by Maddie Heslop
I’ve been volunteering at the London Marathon for years now as part of the BA Athletics Club. We have a team of about 140 volunteers operating 5 crossing points in the last miles of the course from Somerset House down to Birdcage Walk.
The last several years have been at the bottom or Birdcage Walk/Spur Road where the runners only have 400m to go. In addition to getting spectators across the road, we spend the moments in between cheering on the runners and encouraging them. It’s a long day, but great vibes from the runners and the crowds.
It’s a wonderful feeling when you see someone who’s clearly struggling perk up and smile when you call out the name from their t-shirt and see them give it that extra oomph knowing their medal is literally around the curve at that point. Being part of something raising millions of pounds for charities in one day makes for a great Sunday, whatever the weather!
