Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTDIT) arrives in April 2026

From April 2026, HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTDIT) will come into effect. This is a major change to the way self-employed individuals and landlords will need to report their income to HMRC.

Instead of submitting a single annual Self-Assessment return, affected taxpayers will need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software. The aim is to make tax administration more efficient, reduce errors, and give individuals a clearer picture of their tax position throughout the year.

We know that these changes may feel complex, so our tax team has created a dedicated brochure that explains:

  • Who will be affected by MTDIT

  • What records will need to be kept

  • How quarterly reporting works

  • The steps you should be taking now to prepare

Our team is here to guide you through the transition and ensure you are fully prepared ahead of April 2026. For any questions, please contact Simon Boxall from our Tax department simon.boxall@wardwilliams.co.uk or call 01932 830664
