Supporting mental health in business: Why it matters and what we’re doing about it
At Ward Williams, we believe that accountancy is about more than numbers. It’s about people, their goals, and their personal journeys. As trusted advisors, we’re often by our clients’ sides at key moments such as launching a business, navigating change, managing pressure, planning for the future. These are not just financial decisions, they are human ones too.
That’s why we believe mental health has a place in every professional conversation. And it’s why we’re committed to recognising the role of wellbeing plays in both the workplace and in the way we support our clients.
Why mental health is a business matter
Mental health affects how we think, feel, and behave, and that has a direct impact on how we lead teams, make decisions, and handle stress. In the business world, this can influence everything from performance and productivity to communication and risk-taking.
In our experience, mental health challenges don’t always wait until after hours. When clients come to us for advice, it's often in times of pressure or uncertainty. Understanding the emotional context behind business decisions helps us give better, more empathetic advice.
And just as importantly, we apply the same awareness and care within our own teams because looking after our people means we can look after yours better too.
Why we’re talking about mental health openly
We’ve always taken pride in doing the right thing for our clients, for our people, and for the wider community. This year, we are formally recognising Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May 2025). But this isn’t a tick-box exercise. It’s part of a longer-term commitment to building a stronger, healthier workplace, and supporting clients with the same care and humanity.
The national theme this year is Community - something that resonates strongly with us. Whether you're a growing business, a long-standing client, or a new face to the firm, we want you to feel part of a trusted, supportive network that’s here to listen and guide you through more than just the spreadsheets. We are ‘wearing it green’ on Thursday 15 May and having internal fundraising activities to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation (mentalheatlhfoundation.co.uk)
What this means for our clients
When you work with Ward Williams, you're not just getting technical expertise, you're getting a team that understands the bigger picture.
That means:
- We take the time to understand not just your financials, but what’s driving your decisions.
- We work with sensitivity and care during difficult times — from business challenges to personal transitions.
- We support our own teams’ mental health so they’re equipped to support you with clarity, empathy, and focus.
- We recognise when more support is needed, and we’ll help signpost accordingly.
We also understand the strain that running a business can bring - the weight of responsibility, the isolation, the unpredictability. Whether you're a founder managing a start-up, a director preparing for sale, or a family balancing complex estates, we are here as your partner and sounding board.
Creating a Culture of Support — Internally and Externally
Behind the scenes, we’ve been strengthening our own Internal mental health framework, so that people feel supported and our clients benefit from resilient, engaged teams. This includes:
- Trained Mental Health Responders within the firm.
- Access to confidential counselling and medical helplines for our employees 24/7, 365 days a year.
- Regular education and awareness initiatives around workplace wellbeing.
- A culture that encourages checking in, listening, and supporting one another.
Because when people feel supported, they do their best work and that’s something our clients directly benefit from.
A Final Thought
Mental health is not a separate issue from business, it’s central to it. As advisors, we have a role to play not just in profit margins, but in helping people navigate the emotional realities of business ownership, leadership, and change.
At Ward Williams, we’re proud to be part of that conversation and we’re here for our clients in every way that matters.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED:
What is Mental Health?
Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Mental health is just as important as physical health - in fact, they’re closely linked. When one is off balance, it can impact the other.
Mental Health is a spectrum
Just as physical health can vary from day to day, so can mental health. Some days you can feel on top of the world; other days, you might feel overwhelmed or drained. That’s normal.
What’s important is recognising when mental health struggles begin to affect you and seeking help when needed. It’s not a sign of weakness - it’s a sign of strength to seek support and take action.
Signs of Mental Health Struggles
Sometimes, you may not notice that our mental health is affected until it’s impacting your day-to-day, work or relationships. Here are some common signs to watch for both in yourself and others:
- Changes in Behaviour: Sudden mood swings, irritability, or withdrawal from social interactions.
- Decreased Performance: Struggling to focus, meet deadlines, or perform tasks you normally excel at.
- Physical Symptoms: Fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, or trouble sleeping.
- Increased Absenteeism: Taking more sick days or arriving late to work without clear reasons.
- Social Withdrawal: Avoiding team events or declining social invitations more often.
- Negative Thoughts: Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, or a sense that nothing will improve.
